GENERAL PRINCIPLES

Making all your decisions in the same way makes about as much sense as reading the sports pages at the same speed you read a computer manual. These principles can be used in business, family, service clubs, civic organizations, and governmental agencies.

 

A. There is an appropriate place for your feelings, your emotions, when making business decisions. But there are times when you should make the decision with your mind.

B. Neither speed nor slowness is the mark of a good decision-maker.

C. How important is this decision? How urgent is it?

Importance relates to content. Urgency relates to time.

1. Something may be important but not urgent: Reviewing, with the intention to change, your Health Plan

2. Something may be urgent, but not important: Out of clean shirts. Must make time today to get to the laundry

D. Thinking in 2 columns

a. Pluses & Minuses

b. Actions & Results

E. There are three fundamental decision-making formats.

1. unilateral

2. majority vote

3. consensus

F. Depending on many of the factors discussed in this working session, one or more of the following decision-making techniques may be effectively applied to any decision-making format.

1. Decide with your mind.

2. Decide by how you feel.

3. Let them decide.

G. Finally, under some circumstances, a valid decision-making technique is:
