Commissioners,
This has
been quite a busy week, starting Monday off with a very long
City Commission meeting. I have already set up a meeting with
the representatives who spoke on a non-motorized transportation
plan at the meeting. I have also begun the process on setting up
the first Development Process Task Force meeting, a subject that
was also acted upon on Monday evening.
I attended
the monthly meeting of the "Save Our Youth Task Force' the first
thing Tuesday morning. School Superintendent Tom Moline
described the "Youth Challenge Days" which were taking place
this week at the High School. This is a program where adult
volunteers participate in an intense activity and mentoring
session with groups of students. Funding for the Volunteer Drug
Testing Program was also discussed at the meeting.
The
Veterans Day Service that took place later that morning was very
well done and well attended. Our thanks go out to Carol
Hennessey, Mike Sherman and all of the Memorial Society members
who worked so hard with our Department of Recreation and Public
Service in preparing for the event.
A meeting
of the City Commission Liquor Control Subcommittee was held
on Wednesday evening. No items needed to be forwarded on to the
City Commission as the agenda concentrated on discussions with
several license holders regarding enforcement issues.
In addition
to the above, I began performance evaluations on department
heads this week. This annual exercise will be taking up a good
portion of my time over the next two weeks.
The
attached information from Department of Recreation and Public
Service Director Greg Rassel updates us on the status of leaf
collection and the hiring of a new entity to administer the
annual Dream Cruise. Leaf collection has begun on the second
pass and is proceeding from north to south. We are hoping to
complete the entire second pass before the winter sets in.
Speaking of
winter, the attached correspondence from the Oakland County Road
Commission indicates the cutback in snow and ice control that
has been planned by the State Highway Department this year.
Clearing Woodward Avenue will be a real challenge this coming
season. This appears to be the only route affected by the
cutbacks in Royal Oak.
The Royal
Oak Jaycees will be conducting their 3rd annual event, "Deep
Freeze Fundraiser", tonight, November 14, 2008
from 6:00 PM. to 6:00 AM. on Saturday, November 15, 2008. They
will be camping outdoors at the First United Methodist Church,
320 West Seventh Street. All are invited to stop by and offer
your support for this worthy program. The proceeds and donations
will go to the South Oakland Shelter. For additional
information, contact Adam Nelson of the Royal Oak Jaycees at
248-246-3063.
The City of
Royal Oak will hold a Car Auction on Saturday, November 15, 2008
starting at 9:30 AM, located at A&M towing, 303 East Harrison
Street.
The annual
Royal Oak High School PTSA Arts and Craft Fair Show will be held
on Saturday, November 15, 2008 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Royal
Oak High School. Money raised by the craft show helps support
many PTA-sponsored programs. Juried items include jewelry, wood
crafts, pottery, holiday items and much more. The cafeteria will
be open and there will also be a Bake Sale.
Have a great weekend.
