The Last Word?
Global Warming theory is advocated and supported in the right hand column and is attacked and derided in the left hand column. Almost every position ever taken on the matter, every argument ever brought forward -- scientific, speculative, statistical, political, moral -- is touched on somewhere in the two columns. The two reports hit the Internet on the same day. So, except for simple news reporting, and short of some unlikely conclusive proof that one side is right, VersagiVoice will let this be the last word, about the debate itself -- except for an occasional snide comment from me. -- December 2008

Electric automobiles: Sell too many of them which have to be plugged in each night for recharging and you will (1) overwhelm power grids, for which utilities will have to upgrade transformers and power lines; and (2) raise rates for electricity, even for those who don't use "cheap, off-peak" power. As The Economist puts it, "It seems that everyone may have to chip in to get electric cars on the road."

Ed Wolfrum, Ph.D re "GREEN" Electric cars
The reality is that the electric car is less energy efficient than the present I.C. engine.

Present long lines transmission loss is stated as 7.2% from the most recent data being in 1995.http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/ene_ele_pow_tra_and_dis_los_mil_kwh-transmission-distribution-losses-million-kwh) My calculations inclusive of the fuel transmission costs and local (real)transmission losses (from the grid to the home or office) put those losses closer to 35%. (see:
http://peswiki.com/index.php/Electric_power_transmission)

With the I.C. (Internal Combustion) engine now at close to 70% with the electronic controls.  Electric "traction motors" on the electric car are said to be 60% efficient another 40% loss not considering battery losses in the vehicle with Lith-Ion batteries. The "GREEN" electric car is pure propaganda.  Another "Feel Good, Touchy Feely" Let's cut the crap and fix the real problem, that being drilling cheap oil in the U.S. without government "BIG BROTHER" restrictions.  We have plenty of oil here, with the discovery of the new oil in Wyoming and the rest of the west. The numbers say it all.

Surprise #2 comes when after four or so years the battery needs replacement and you are forced (like a friend of mine with a Hybrid) to cough up $4K+ to replace it!! We have to find an economically sensible battery chemistry if the electric car is to be a realistic consideration. This does not take into account the mileage limitations of the electric car. How are you going to drive up north in a VOLT???

I think that many scientists on either side of the global warming debate should withdraw and shut up. To illustrate:

I started my occupational life as a scientist. In the first of my three careers I was a chemist. I chose to specialize in inorganic chemistry. From that broad field, I picked metallurgical chemistry. As it happened, my first job and subsequent industrial career had most to do with copper-based alloys and very little with ferrous alloys.

I became recognized in my field and capped off that career with publication of a well-received book,  "Routine Analysis of Copper-Based Alloys." Late in that career, plastics had become serious competition for many applications which had previously been the sole province of metals. I participated in the professional debate about the suitability of plastics as replacements for everything from extruded piping (polyethylene, PVC) to forged valves (nylon).

Regardless of my feelings about the potential market threat (I helped my employer add plastic products to our sales-mix), my participation in the public debate could be seriously considered only when I spoke from my expertise, copper-based alloys. I could not speak with authority about plastic vs. wrought iron or galvanized sheet metal or steel. About global warming,, my scientific background does not qualify me to offer more than my, anti-green, opinions.

Published lists of hundreds of "scientists" takings sides about global warming include such disciplines as chemists, biologists, archaeologists, physicists -- individuals who are not climate change scientists but who can easily be identified as pro- or anti-green. I have previously written that no scientist, whatever her field, can deny that every time nitric acid is poured over brass or bronze drillings, the metal will dissolve. It's conceivable, I suppose, that a disbeliever might come up with a computer model which proves otherwise.

The point: Putting aside the opinions of the non-specialists, climatologists disagree about global warming.  Laypeople are understandably dismissive of scientific debates based largely on computer models when something as fundamental as the macro and micro placement of thermometers around the world is part of the argument.

The global warming, climate change debate is good for at least another generation or two. -- FJV:Feb 2010

House Democrats don't want Gore humiliated'
Washington, DC -- UK's Lord Christopher Monckton, a former science advisor to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, claimed House Democrats have refused to allow him to appear alongside former Vice President Al Gore at a high profile global warming hearing on Friday April 24, 2009 at 10am in Washington. Monckton told Climate Depot that the Democrats rescinded his scheduled joint appearance at the House Energy and Commerce hearing on Friday. Monckton said he was informed that he would not be allowed to testify alongside Gore when his plane landed from England Thursday afternoon.

“The House Democrats don't want Gore humiliated, so they slammed the door of the Capitol in my face,” Monckton told Climate Depot in an exclusive interview. “They are cowards.” -- Thursday, April 23, 2009 By Marc Morano

UN Blowback: More Than 650 International Scientists Dissent Over Man-Made Global Warming Claims
Study: Half of warming due to Sun! –Sea Levels Fail to Rise? - Warming Fears in 'Dustbin of History'

POZNAN, Poland - The UN global warming conference currently underway in Poland is about to face a serious challenge from over 650 dissenting scientists from around the globe who are criticizing the climate claims made by the UN IPCC and former Vice President Al Gore. Set for release this week, a newly updated U.S. Senate Minority Report features the dissenting voices of over 650 international scientists, many current and former UN IPCC scientists, who have now turned against the UN.

The report has added about 250 scientists (and growing) in 2008 to the over 400 scientists who spoke out in 2007. The over 650 dissenting scientists are more than 12 times the number of UN scientists (52) who authored the media hyped IPCC 2007 Summary for Policymakers.

The U.S. Senate report is the latest evidence of the growing groundswell of scientific opposition rising to challenge the UN and Gore. Full Report Set To Be Released in the Next 24 Hours – Stay Tuned… A hint of what the upcoming report contains

“I am a skeptic…Global warming has become a new religion.” - Nobel Prize Winner for Physics, Ivar Giaever.

“Since I am no longer affiliated with any organization nor receiving any funding, I can speak quite frankly….As a scientist I remain skeptical.” - Atmospheric Scientist Dr. Joanne Simpson, the first woman in the world to receive a PhD in meteorology and formerly of NASA who has authored more than 190 studies and has been called “among the most preeminent scientists of the last 100 years.”

Warming fears are the “worst scientific scandal in the history…When people come to know what the truth is, they will feel deceived by science and scientists.” - UN IPCC Japanese Scientist Dr. Kiminori Itoh, an award-winning PhD environmental physical chemist.

“The IPCC has actually become a closed circuit; it doesn’t listen to
others. It doesn’t have open minds… I am really amazed that the Nobel Peace Prize has been given on scientifically incorrect conclusions by people who are not geologists,” - Indian geologist Dr. Arun D. Ahluwalia at Punjab University and a board member of the UN-supported International Year of the Planet.

“The models and forecasts of the UN IPCC "are incorrect because they only are based on mathematical models and presented results at scenarios that do not include, for example, solar activity.” - Victor Manuel Velasco Herrera, a researcher at the Institute of Geophysics of the National Autonomous University of Mexico

“It is a blatant lie put forth in the media that makes it seem there is
only a fringe of scientists who don’t buy into anthropogenic global
warming.” - U.S Government Atmospheric Scientist Stanley B. Goldenberg of the Hurricane Research Division of NOAA.

“Even doubling or tripling the amount of carbon dioxide will virtually
have little impact, as water vapour and water condensed on particles as clouds dominate the worldwide scene and always will.” – .Geoffrey G.Duffy, a professor in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering of the University of Auckland, NZ.

“After reading [UN IPCC chairman] Pachauri's asinine comment [comparing skeptics to] Flat Earthers, it's hard to remain quiet.” - Climate statistician Dr. William M. Briggs, who specializes in the statistics of forecast evaluation, serves on the American Meteorological Society's Probability and Statistics Committee and is an Associate Editor of Monthly Weather Review.

“For how many years must the planet cool before we begin to understand that the planet is not warming? For how many years must cooling go on?" - Geologist Dr. David Gee the chairman of the science committee of the 2008 International Geological Congress who has authored 130 plus peer reviewed papers, and is currently at Uppsala University in Sweden.

“Gore prompted me to start delving into the science again and I quickly found myself solidly in the skeptic camp…Climate models can at best be useful for explaining climate changes after the fact.” - Meteorologist Hajo Smit of Holland, who reversed his belief in man-made warming to become a skeptic, is a former member of the Dutch UN IPCC committee.

“Many [scientists] are now searching for a way to back out quietly (from promoting warming fears), without having their professional careers ruined.” - Atmospheric physicist James A. Peden, formerly of the Space Research and Coordination Center in Pittsburgh.

“Creating an ideology pegged to carbon dioxide is a dangerous nonsense…The present alarm on climate change is an instrument of social control, a pretext for major businesses and political battle. It became an ideology, which is concerning.” - Environmental Scientist Professor Delgado Domingos of Portugal, the founder of the Numerical Weather Forecast group, has more than 150 published articles.

“CO2 emissions make absolutely no difference one way or another….Every scientist knows this, but it doesn’t pay to say so…Global warming, as a political vehicle, keeps Europeans in the driver’s seat and developing nations walking barefoot.” - Dr. Takeda Kunihiko, vice-chancellor of the Institute of Science and Technology Research at Chubu University in Japan.

“The [global warming] scaremongering has its justification in the fact
that it is something that generates funds.” - Award-winning Paleontologist Dr. Eduardo Tonni, of the Committee for Scientific Research in Buenos Aires and head of the Paleontology Department at the University of La Plata. # #

In addition, the report will feature new peer-reviewed scientific studies
and analyses refuting man-made warming fears and a heavy dose of
inconvenient climate developments. (See Below: Study: Half of warming due to Sun! –Sea Levels Fail to Rise? - Warming Fears in 'Dustbin of History')

The Senate Minority Report is an update of 2007’s blockbuster U.S. Senate Minority Report of over 400 dissenting scientists. See here: This new report will contain the names, quotes and analyses of literally hundreds of additional international scientists who publicly dissented from man-made climate fears in just 2008 alone. The chorus of scientific voices skeptical grow louder as a steady stream of peer-reviewed studies, analyses and real world data challenge the UN and former Vice President Al Gore's claims that the "science is settled" and there is a "consensus."

Meanwhile, while the UN climate conference is in session here in Poznan, the bad scientific news for promoters of man-made climate alarm just keeps rolling in. Below is a very small sampling of very inconvenient developments for Gore, the United Nations, and their promoters in the mainstream media. Peer-reviewed studies, analyses, and prominent scientists continue to speak out to refute climate fears. The data presented below is just from the past week.

Peer-reviewed study: Half of recent warming was solar! - December 10, 2008

Excerpt: In this dose of peer-reviewed skeptical climatological
literature, we follow Climate Research News. The blog was intrigued by a new article in Geophysical Research Letters that was accepted on Friday, December 5th. Eichler, A., S. Olivier, K. Henderson, A. Laube, J. Beer, T.
Papina, H. W. Gäggeler, and M. Schwikowski: Temperature response in the Altai region lags solar forcing - Recall that the Siberian Altai Mountains are found at the intersection of Russia, China, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan.

The authors looked at 750 years worth of the local ice core, especially the oxygen isotope. They claim to have found a very strong correlation between the concentration of this isotope (i.e. temperature) on one side and the known solar activity in the epoch 1250-1850. Their data seem to be precise enough to determine the lag, about 10-30 years. It takes some time for the climate to respond to the solar changes. It seems that they also have data to claim that the correlation gets less precise after 1850.

They attribute the deviation to CO2 and by comparing the magnitude of the forcings, they conclude that "Our results are in agreement with studies based on NH temperature reconstructions [Scafetta et al., 2007] revealing that only up to approximately 50% of the observed global warming in the last 100 years can be explained by the Sun." Well, the word "only" is somewhat cute in comparison with the "mainstream" fashionable ideology.

The IPCC said that they saw a 90% probability that "most" of the recent warming was man-made. The present paper would reduce this figure, 90%, to less than 50% because the Sun itself is responsible for 1/2 of the warming and not the whole 50% of the warming could have been caused by CO2 because there are other effects, too.

Note that if 0.3 °C or 0.4 °C of warming in the 20th century was due to the increasing CO2 levels, the climate sensitivity is decisively smaller than 1 °C. At any rate, the expected 21st century warming due to CO2 would be another 0.3-0.4 °C, and this time, if the solar activity contributes with the opposite sign, these two effects could cancel.

Even if you try to stretch these numbers a little bit - but not unrealistically - you have to become sure that the participants of the Poznan conference are lunatics.

Oscillation Rules as the Pacific Cools – December 9, 2008 Excerpt: A cool wedge of lower-than-normal sea-surface heights continues to dominate the tropical Pacific, ringed by a horseshoe of warmer waters. The continuation of this long-term cool phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation stacks the odds against a wetter-than-average winter/spring in the southwestern United States. The latest image of sea-surface height measurements from the U.S./French Jason-1 oceanography satellite shows the Pacific Ocean remains locked in a strong, cool phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, a large, long-lived pattern of climate variability in the Pacific associated with a general cooling of Pacific waters. […]

Sea-surface temperature satellite data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration mirror Jason sea-surface height measurements, clearly showing a cool Pacific Decadal Oscillation pattern, as seen at: http://www.cdc.noaa.gov/map/images/sst/sst.anom.gif .

"This multi-year Pacific Decadal Oscillation 'cool' trend can cause La Niña-like impacts around the Pacific basin," said Bill Patzert, an oceanographer and climatologist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. […] This cool phase will likely persist this winter and, perhaps, beyond.

Report: Sea Level rise 'has stumbled since 2005' – Meteorologist Anthony Watts – December 5, 2008

Excerpt: We’ve been waiting for the UC web page to be updated with the most recent sea level data. It finally has been updated for 2008. It looks like the steady upward trend of sea level as measured by satellite has stumbled since 2005. The 60 day line in blue
tells the story. From the University of Colorado web page: “Long-term mean sea level change is a variable of considerable interest in the studies of global climate change. The measurement of long-term changes in global mean sea level can provide an important corroboration of predictions by climate models of global warming.

Long term sea level variations are primarily determined with two different methods.” - Yes, I would agree, it is indeed a variable of considerable interest. The question now is, how is it linked
to global climate change (aka global warming) if CO2 continues to
increase, and sea level does not?

Peer-Reviewed Study: Recent worldwide land warming' NOT 'a direct response to increasing greenhouse gases (GHGs) over land' - WorldClimateReport.com

Alert: 2008 will be coolest year of the decade!- December 5, 2008 Excerpt:
This year is set to be the coolest since 2000, according to a preliminary estimate of global average temperature that is due to be released next week by the Met Office. The global average for 2008 should come in close to 14.3C, which is 0.14C below the average temperature for 2001-07. [Note: For evidence of the panic apparently gripping the promoters of man-made climate fear, read the quotes in the article from the warming partisans absolutely assuring everyone that cool temperatures are “absolutely not" evidence that global warming is on the wane. Those same voices are usually
absent when it comes to linking heat waves to global warming. ]

something to behold. ... What was down, is now up." "How not to measure temperature, part 79"Geophysist:

‘It is time to file this theory in the dustbin of history’ –

‘Alarmists are in denial and running for cover'- Washington Times
By Geophysicist Dr. David Deming, associate professor of arts and sciences at the University of Oklahoma who has published numerous peer-reviewed research articles. Excerpt: Environmental extremists and global warming alarmists are in denial and running for cover.

Their rationale for continuing a lost cause is that weather events in the short term are not necessarily related to long-term climatic trends. But these are the same people who screamed at us each year that ordinary weather events such as high temperatures or hurricanes were undeniable evidence of imminent doom.

Now that global warming is over, politicians are finally ready to enact
dubious solutions to a non-existent problem. […] To the extent global
warming was ever valid, it is now officially over. It is time to file this
theory in the dustbin of history, next to Aristotelean physics, Neptunism, the geocentric universe, phlogiston, and a plethora of other incorrect scientific theories, all of which had vocal and dogmatic supporters who cited incontrovertible evidence. Weather and climate change are natural processes beyond human control. To argue otherwise is to deny the factual evidence.

Alert: Under the Weather: Internal Report Says U.N. Climate Agency Rife With Bad Practices - Fox News – December 4, 2008

Excerpt: As more than 10,000 delegates and observers gather in Poznan, Poland, to discuss the next phase in the battle against "climate change," a U.N. agency at the center of that hoopla badly needs to do some in-house weather-proofing. […] But the WMO, the $80 million U.N. front-line agency in the climate change struggle, and the source for much of the world's information in the global atmosphere and water supply, has serious  management problems of its own, despite its rapidly expanding global ambitions.

The international agency has been sharply criticized by a U.N.
inspection unit in a confidential report obtained by FOX News, for, among other things, haphazard budget practices, deeply flawed organizational procedures, and no effective oversight by the 188 nations that formally make up its membership and dole out its funds.

The inspection was carried out by a member of the United Nations Joint Inspection Unit (JIU), a small, independent branch of the U.N. that reports to the General Assembly and is mandated to improve the organization's efficiency and coordination through its inspection process. […] WMO did not respond to a series of
questions from FOX News regarding its future programs, sent on the eve of the Poznan meeting.

16-year-old suggests sheep dung can help save planet Card business has really dung good - Daily Post North Wales

other North Wales businesses to follow Creative Paper Wales’ example and adopt innovative approaches to the design and manufacture of products and the delivery of services.

Lord Christopher Monckton: 'Companies could be sued over climate change'
Excerpt: The alarmist faction knows that, if it were to bring a case
against a corporation whose executives were not minded merely to believe in the extremist presentation of "global warming" just because it is temporarily in fashion, they would lose.

The case of Dimmock v. Secretaries of State for Education and for the Environment in the UK in 2007 was a very clear warning. The UK Government threw all of the resources of the taxpayer and of the Meteorological Office at the case, attempting to defend Al Gore's sci-fi comedy horror movie against the plaintiff's allegation that it was serially and seriously inaccurate.

The Government failed and was humiliated. The judge, having heard both sides, said bluntly of Al Gore, and particularly of his unscientific allegation that sea level was about to rise by 20 feet, that "the Armageddon scenario that he depicts is not based on any scientific view". A few more judgments like that and the "global warming" fantasy would rapidly collapse. End of scare.

OOPS, We Forgot Siberia! (M4GW) - Weather Stations in Coldest parts No Longer Reporting
Excerpt: The thing that these skewed chart never take into account is that when the Soviet Union fell in 1990 the number of reporting weather stations went form a high of 15,000 in 1970 to 5,000 in 2000. This takes some of the coldest places on the planet out of the equation like Siberia.

POZNAN, Poland (AP) — Scientists studying the changing nature of the Earth's
climate say they have completed one crucial task — proving beyond a doubt that global warming is real. Now they have to figure out just what to do about it.

"It is critical for us to get a much better understanding of the impact of
climate change in some parts of the world," Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, told The Associated Press in an interview Tuesday.
Scientific warnings of potential catastrophe have been the backdrop for talks among more than 10,000 delegates and environmentalists negotiating a treaty to control the emission of greenhouse gases, which have grown by 70 percent since 1970. The treaty, due to be completed in one year, would replace the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012.

Innovation: Ideas to Power the Future
Pachauri said he was concerned that negotiators were sparring and probing — and leaving key decisions for the last moment. "My concern is that if we leave everything to the end, we might end up with a
weak agreement that doesn't really address the problem," he said.

Last year, Pachauri's IPCC, which collected the work of more than 2,000
scientists, said climate change is "unequivocal, is already happening, and is caused by human activity." It listed likely effects of global warming: arid regions will grow dryer, rising seas will flood coastal areas, melting glaciers will flood communities downstream and then dry up the source of future water supplies, and up to 30 percent of all plant and animal species may become extinct.

Since then, new evidence has emerged showing that ice caps in the Arctic and Antarctic are melting, which threatens to dramatically raise the level of the oceans and flood coastal cities and low-lying islands.
"Small island states are living in a state of fear," he said.

But Pachauri said there was no conclusive evidence the world is in imminent danger. "I don't think we should jump to conclusions if we get material that is based on the last one or two years," the Indian scientist said. The IPCC issues its reports every five or six years.

The 2007 report cited a scientific consensus that global warming should be limited to 2 degrees Centigrade (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) to avoid the worst scenarios. To contain global warming to that target, carbon emissions must peak by 2015, then begin a rapid decline.

Pachauri now says governments should reconsider whether even that goal goes far enough, since it would still raise sea levels from between 15 inches (40 centimeters) to 4.6 feet (1.4 meters). Dozens of scientists were among the delegations or nongovernment groups attending the Poznan conference, exhibiting some of the latest technologies and scientific studies.

"The skeptics are doing a good job because they are making us present ironclad proof," said Lawrence E. Buja, a climate change researcher for the U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado. But since that battle is over, he said scientists need to move on and look at the detailed impact of climate change.
"That's a much harder question," he said.

Buja, who contributed to the IPCC report, said scientists are looking at
futuristic solutions to halt global warming, such as imitating the cooling
effects of a massive volcanic eruption by spreading sulfur in the atmosphere, or scattering billions tiny refractors high in the air to dim the sun and lower the temperature.

But he said such radical solutions involve risks. "How are you going to go up and find all those little refractors and pull them down if something bad starts to happen?" he asked.

Despite what this article claims, the most important question of global warming -- the climate sensitivity, or the amount of warming CO2 will actually generate -- is still a wide open question. Much research in the past couple years (as well as observational data) suggests the modelers have vastly overstated this figure, and CO2's effects are much smaller than once thought.

The true believers of global warming (or "Climate Change" if they feel the need to cover their bets should it get colder again) act much as religious cultists, IMO.They often make statements like the above "The skeptics are doing a good job because they are making us present ironclad proof," as though they were actually doing that. But they don't.

Problem is, from Gore on down, they don't answer the issues, but act as though they did. And pronounce themselves the winners while they're at it. Skeptics are dismissed as "deniers" as though the truth were obvious and beyond question.

Look at back issues of Time and Newsweek (among other publications) from 30 or so years ago and they claimed our problem was "global cooling" or "The Coming Ice Age".

Yet climate change must be a long term affair otherwise we're just talking about the weather. How can we have such diametrically opposed "problems" within such a short time frame?

Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) is a theory (hypothesis). It is an
unproven theory. What you do with theories is put them to the test with
scientific observations. Let's see what data points we now have:
1) Average annual temperatures have not surpassed 1998 (NOAA)
(University of Alabama)

2) Average annual temperatures are now trending downward since 1998 (NOAA) (University of Alabama)

3) Ocean temperatures have not risen since 2000 when the 3000 Argo buoys were launched. The buoys even show a slight decrease in ocean temperatures

4) The Arctic ice froze to February levels by December 07, there are 1mm more sq km than before (previous was 13mm sq km)

5) The Arctic ice is 20cm thicker than "normal" (whatever that is)

6) All polar bear pods are stable or growing (NOAA/PBS)

7) Mount Kilimanjaro is not melting because of global warming, rather
"sublimation"

8) The Antarctic is not "melting", it is growing in most places, the
sloughing off at the edges is normal as the ice mass grows

9) The majority of the Antarctic is 8 degrees below "normal" (again,
whatever that is)

10) The coveted .7 degree rise in temperatures over the last 100 years
has been wiped out with last years below "normal" temperatures (NOAA
coolest winter since 2001)

11) Al Gores film was just deemed "propaganda" in a court of law in the
UK as many points could not be substantiated by scientists

12) It was also just reveled that some of the footage in Als film was
CGI. The ice shelf collapse was from the movie The Day After Tomorrow (ABC)

13) One of the scientists that originally thought that CO2 preceded the
warming has now found with new data that the CO2 rise follows the
warming (Dr David Evans)

14) August 2008 was the first time since 1913 there were no sun spots.

15) The Medieval Warm Period was warmer than the 20th century (no SUVs)

16) Many scientists are now predicting 30 years of cooling.

17) The greenhouse effect is real, our small contribution to it cannot
even be measured

18) Several publications, including those that are warmist have recently
written that the natural cycles of the earth may mask AGW. Give me a break.

The Head of the IPCC is a RailRoad Locomotive Engineer turned Climate Scientist from India? That qualifys him to drive a taxi in Manhattan in his spare time. Who did he "do" to get the job?

I think I'll stick with REAL science & REAL Scientists. The International
Climate Science Coalition and their thousands of members have issued a letter debunking Anthropogenic Warming. It is a HOAX.

I'm for cleaner air and water, managing our resources, and planting more trees, but global warming is just hot air. We don't need to destroy our economy and push our progress back to Stone Age over disputed and questionable evidence. It is all putting time and money into wrong areas.

"A lot of folks believe there's a significant amount of woody biomass that can be used for renewable energy. In reality, not everything that's physically available is economically feasible or environmentally sustainable." . . . "There simply is nowhere near enough waste wood for all of these biomass projects that are popping up all over the place."

Those concerns come from such sources as the Sierra Club in Michigan and researchers at the University of Minnesota. Environmentalists are concerned that the ecosystem will be damaged by extensive use of limbs and bark and logging debris for power generation. In their mind, biomass does not really qualify as "renewable" energy. Green enthusiasts fear that biomass-focused investments may be at risk if public woodlands become "unreliable sources" of biomass. The cost of removing and transporting the biomass is also a disincentive. Among those pushing biomass are government agencies which see the concept as reducing the nation's dependence on foreign sources of oil.  -- Associated Press

§ Australia is leading the revolt against Al Gore’s great big AGW conspiracy – just as the Aussie geologist and AGW sceptic Professor Ian Plimer predicted it would. ABC news reports that five frontbenchers from Australia’s opposition Liberal party have resigned their portfolios rather than follow their leader Malcolm Turnbull in voting with Kevin Rudd’s Government on a new Emissions Trading Scheme.

The Liberal Party is in turmoil with the resignations of five frontbenchers from their portfolios this afternoon in protest against the emissions trading scheme. Tony Abbott, Sophie Mirabella, Tony Smith and Senators Nick Minchin and Eric Abetz have all quit their portfolios because they cannot vote for the legislation. Senate whip Stephen Parry has also relinquished his position. -- Telegraph.co.uk

Electric automobiles: Sell too many of them which have to be plugged in each night for recharging and you will (1) overwhelm power grids, for which utilities will have to upgrade transformers and power lines; and (2) raise rates for electricity, even for those who don't use "cheap, off-peak" power. As The Economist puts it, "It seems that everyone may have to chip in to get electric cars on the road." -- Feb 2010

Senior UMP politicians have blamed the defeat in part on the proposed tax, which was due to come into effect on July.--Financial Times: Europe

§ Climate change enthusiasts err when they cite this year's major earthquakes as proof that mankind is messing up the planet. There is "nothing unusual about the number of big quakes these days . . . The activity is normal," says the Seismology Center at the Central Weather Bureau in Taiwan, which felt a 6.4 quake of its own on March 4.

"Earth typically experiences one 8.0 or higher 'great' earthquake each year, along with 17 major ones of magnitude 7 to 7.9, and 134 in the 6 to 6.9 range. There are also some 1.5 million lesser seismic events each year," reports the Christian Science Monitor in a review which adds, "We live on a geologically active planet where temblors are normal. But there's more we can do to prepare and respond to them." -- Mar 2010

Organic Myths
Political Correctness re health foods questioned

"Health professionals also reject the claim that organic food is safer to eat due to lower pesticide residues. Food and Drug Administration surveys have revealed that the highest dietary exposures to pesticide residues on foods in the United States are so trivial (less than one one-thousandth of a level that would cause toxicity) that the safety gains from buying organic are insignificant." -- Foreign Policy: May/June 2010
